Who Gets Discovery+
The billionaires are buying up the country and it makes me think about the fall of the U.S.S.R. I don't actually know much about the fall, but I know that's when the oligarchs really swooped in and snatched everything up. Our oligarchs are certainly swooping in and snatching thigs.
I saw a creator on tiktok explain how/why she thinks Larry Ellison is going to buy Discovery+, and how the whole Netflix/WB deal could have been orchestrated to make that happen while looking like a flop for Ellison. I want to talk about what's going to happen if we let Ellison buy Discovery+.
Larry Ellison: CEO of Oracle. Oracle Corporation is a massive data base and an AI company. The guy who owns that could own CNN before the primaries. If that happens, anyone still watching needs to look away swiftly. I feel like this has been undersold. Honestly, go ahead and turn it off if you haven't already because legacy media is failing us. I'm so tired of watching masses of people get manipulated into hateful behavior, or docile permissiveness. Our media literacy has not improved as of late. Hell, our literacy is slouching while AI is making leaps and bounds. We are vulnerable right now, but we can find our strength in numbers.
If we collectively look away we can resist it. We need to turn to independent journalists and we need to be careful about how we do that. It's time for media to hold politicians and corporations truly accountable. In the coming election we need to be critical of both sides, but in a constructive way where appropriate. I don't think we should be constructive toward or tolerant of white supremacy or Christian Nationalism. But we have to work together if we're going to put this oligarchy fire sale out. We have to mend the divisions those in power have perpetrated upon our society for centuries, so we can build a nation on a foundation of fairness and equity.
Whoever buys Discover+ will be trying to shape the narrative. But We The People should not let them. These corporations have done enough consolidating. It's time we break them back up. We won't do that if we fall for their alternative facts. They don't make reality, they fake it. We need to look through their version, not at it.
Call your legislators to advocate against the deal and convince your friends to do the same. But we can't necessarily depend on the people in power to pull through. We have to show them what People Power is. Talk to people about what's going on and why it's not okay; consider joining a General Strike; those who can't strike, organize with mutual aid networks to support those who do with your time or money; give less of your money to the billionaire fascists; and stand together for a better future.
